Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, died Wednesday after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, suffering fatal injuries, according to local police.

Authorities received a call about an aggressive man possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol before the incident.

Payne, who had openly struggled with alcoholism, was reportedly sober for six months. Fans gathered outside the hotel in shock, creating a memorial, the Associated Press has reported.

Payne is survived by his son, Bear, former partner Cheryl, and his family.
