European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested the EU could learn from Italy’s policy of processing migrants in Albania, as EU leaders discussed migration at a summit.
Italy recently transferred 16 migrants to Albania under a new agreement, though some were sent back due to medical or age concerns.
Von der Leyen also proposed new legislation to increase migrant deportations, noting only 20% of irregular migrants are currently returned, the BBC has reported.
Critics, including NGOs and political opponents, argue the Albania scheme is costly and harmful, while others see it as a bold step in handling migration.
Several EU countries are hardening their migration policies amid rising support for far-right parties.
