Putin hosts Global South leaders at BRICS summit meant to counterbalance West

World leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping and India’s Narendra Modi, convened in Kazan, Russia, for a three-day BRICS summit focused on countering Western influence.

The event, featuring representatives from 36 countries, aims to strengthen ties among developing economies and proposes a new payment system to bypass SWIFT and Western sanctions.

Putin emphasized the significance of Russia-China relations, while Modi advocated for peace regarding the Ukraine conflict, the Independent has reported.

The summit also includes discussions on creating a multipolar global order, with Putin set to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
