Ukraine’s population has declined by about eight million since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to the U.N. Population Fund.
The country had already lost an estimated 10 million people since 2014, with the population dropping from 45 million in 2014 to around 35 million today.
The war has caused 6.7 million refugees to flee, and Ukraine now has one of the world’s lowest birth rates, at about one child per woman, CBS News has reported.
War casualties also contribute to the population decline, with tens of thousands of deaths reported.
