Appeals court orders new sentence for disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti over stealing from clients

A federal appeals court vacated Michael Avenatti’s 14-year prison sentence for defrauding clients and ordered a resentencing.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the trial judge improperly calculated the sentence, giving too much weight to a perjury enhancement and not enough to the value of Avenatti’s legal work and payments to victims.

Avenatti, known for representing Stormy Daniels against former President Trump, was also sentenced for stealing from Daniels and attempting to extort Nike, The Hill has reported.

The trial court will decide if his new sentence should run concurrently with his previous ones.
