Ukrainian President Zelenskyy declined to host U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Kyiv following his meeting with Russian President Putin at the BRICS summit in Russia.
Ukrainian officials criticized Guterres for attending the summit, where he called for a “just peace” and appeared alongside Putin, who is wanted by the ICC for alleged war crimes.
In his U.N. Day speech, Zelenskyy underscored the importance of the U.N. Charter’s principles, Politico has reported.
Lithuania’s foreign minister suggested Guterres should consider stepping down, while Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, condemned his actions.
