2 boys, both 12, killed on Halloween hayrides in warning to families

Two tragic incidents this month involving hayrides serve as warnings about the potential dangers of this popular fall activity.

On October 12, 12-year-old Samuel “Sam” Jessen from Ooltewah, Tennessee, was killed when he fell under the wheels of a tractor during a haunted hayride in Chattanooga while attempting to scare riders.

In a separate incident, 12-year-old Alexander “Xander” Mick of Rice, Minnesota, died after being run over by a wagon at the Harvest of Horror Haunted Hayride, where he was a volunteer.

Both families have started GoFundMe campaigns for medical and funeral expenses.

In response to the incidents, Harvest of Horror canceled its remaining events for the season, Fox News has reported.

Obituaries highlight the boys’ passions and vibrant personalities, with recommendations from Nationwide Children’s Hospital advising parents on hayride safety, including following posted rules, staying seated during rides, and keeping children clear of the hayride’s path.
