Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson proposes $300 million property tax hike

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed a $300 million property tax hike to close a $982 million budget gap for 2025, despite previously pledging not to raise property taxes.

Johnson cited the need to avoid mass layoffs and maintain city services, though the proposal faces opposition from several aldermen who suggest alternative budget cuts, especially within the police department.

The increase would impact homeowners, adding about $175 to property taxes on a $200,000 home, CBS News has reported.

Johnson’s plan, which also draws on savings and tax surplus funds, needs City Council approval by year’s end.
