Brett Hankison, a former Louisville police officer, was acquitted of one count related to violating the civil rights of Breonna Taylor’s neighbors during a 2020 botched raid, but jurors remain deadlocked on a second count concerning Taylor’s rights.
The jury’s partial verdict followed their inability to reach a unanimous decision earlier in the day.
Hankison fired 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment, which endangered her neighbors, according to prosecutors, while the defense argued he acted in self-defense during a poorly planned raid.
This retrial is Hankison’s third, following a previous mistrial and a state trial where he was acquitted of wanton endangerment charges, ABC News has reported.
He was fired for violating police procedures during the incident, which resulted in Taylor’s death.
