A significant fire beneath a bridge over the Ohio River closed Interstate 471, a major route between Cincinnati and northern Kentucky, on Friday.
The fire, which ignited near a playground, caused flames to shoot over 40 feet high and damaged part of the bridge’s steel structure, including warping several beams and causing concrete to fall.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The Ohio Department of Transportation stated that repairs to the heavily damaged southbound lanes could take weeks, requiring the replacement of at least three beams and a section of the roadway, the Associated Press has reported.
The cause of the fire, which was fueled by mulch and playground materials, is under investigation, with over 60 firefighters responding to bring it under control.
