A 61-year-old surfer in Maui, Hawaii, survived a shark attack near Waiehu Beach Park on Friday, managing to swim partway to shore despite losing part of his leg.
A bystander then helped him reach land, where police and medical teams applied tourniquets to control the bleeding.
The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Maui officials praised the surfer’s resilience and the quick response by rescuers, CNN has reported.
The beach was temporarily closed following the incident.
