Speaker Mike Johnson walks back comments that GOP would ‘probably’ try to repeal CHIPS Act

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s suggestion to potentially repeal the CHIPS Act could hurt the reelection chances of GOP Rep. Brandon Williams in New York.

At a campaign event, Johnson indicated Republicans might consider repealing the semiconductor manufacturing package if they regain power, but later clarified that he supports Micron’s investment in the area and does not intend to repeal the act.

Williams quickly defended the CHIPS Act’s importance to the region.

Johnson’s comments drew Democratic criticism, with opponent John Mannion vowing to protect the legislation and its investments in the district, CNN has reported.
