In Missouri, torrential rains caused flash flooding, killing at least five people, including an elderly couple who served as election poll workers.
Up to 8 inches of rain led to widespread flooding, with dozens of water rescues.
The couple’s vehicle was swept away in Wright County, where their bodies were later found.
Two other fatalities occurred in St. Louis County, and a fifth death was reported in Ironton, CBS News has reported.
The storm system also spawned tornadoes in Oklahoma and Arkansas, though no fatalities were reported from them. Damage assessments are ongoing.
