A Chicago police officer, 26, was fatally shot on Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. after officers stopped a vehicle with three people inside.
As officers approached, gunfire erupted, striking the officer multiple times.
The officer later died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
One of the individuals in the vehicle was also shot and died from their injuries, with a handgun found in their possession.
The suspect who shot the officer fled but was later apprehended, NBC 5 Chicago has reported.
Mayor Brandon Johnson and police officials expressed their condolences and called for support for the officer’s family.
