Over 4,000 illegal miners, or Zama Zamas, are trapped in a South African gold mine, many too weak to surface.
Authorities have blocked entrances, recovering one body and arresting over 1,000 since the crackdown began.
Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni insists the miners will be “smoked out” and arrested, drawing criticism for neglecting their right to life.
Families and protesters demand help, while worsening underground conditions are reported, CBS News has reported.
Many miners say they risk illegal work to support their families.
