Minnesota man freed after 16 years behind bars for a murder prosecutors say he didn’t commit

After serving 16 years for a murder he didn’t commit, Edgar Barrientos-Quintana was released from prison when a judge vacated his 2009 conviction.

Barrientos-Quintana had been sentenced to life for the 2008 drive-by shooting death of Jesse Mickelson in Minneapolis.

A review by the Attorney General’s office revealed flaws in the case, leading to the dismissal of all charges.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty apologized for the harm caused by the wrongful conviction, CNN has reported.

Barrientos-Quintana, who had maintained his innocence, expressed gratitude for his release and the support of his legal team and family.
