House Speaker Mike Johnson explained his opposition to releasing the House Ethics Committee report on Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., during a “Fox News Sunday” appearance.
Johnson argued that releasing the report after Gaetz’s resignation could set a dangerous precedent, as the Ethics Committee’s jurisdiction is limited to current members of Congress.
The report, which pertains to alleged sexual misconduct, was halted when Gaetz resigned.
Gaetz denied the allegations, calling them false, while the DOJ previously investigated him but did not press charges, Fox News has reported.
Some Senate members, including Sen. John Cornyn, indicated they would seek access to the report.
