The former chief coroner, Thomas Teague KC, has warned that the UK’s proposed assisted dying bill could lead to “non-voluntary euthanasia” if passed.
Teague, in a report ahead of a key parliamentary vote on Nov 29, argues that the safeguards in the bill are insufficient and would lead to a broader expansion of euthanasia, as seen in the Netherlands and Canada.
Legal experts, including Lord Sumption and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, have also expressed concerns that the bill could quickly expand under human rights laws, The Telegraph has reported.
The report highlights the rapid escalation of assisted dying in countries like Canada, where it now includes disabled individuals and will soon extend to those with mental health conditions.
