Brazilian police arrest 5 officers over coup plot and plans to kill Lula, others

Brazilian federal police arrested five individuals, including military personnel and a federal officer, accused of plotting a coup and planning assassinations of President Lula, Vice President Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice de Moraes after the 2022 elections.

Among those detained was retired Brig. Gen. Mário Fernandes, linked to pro-Bolsonaro protest camps and accused of providing financial and logistical support for the plot.

The group allegedly planned attacks using explosives or poison. Investigators found no evidence the plans were carried out but uncovered documents and messages indicating monitoring of targets, the Associated Press has reported.

Bolsonaro, under investigation for multiple alleged crimes, denies involvement.
