Los Angeles is preparing for a confrontation with President-elect Donald Trump over immigration, as its city council plans to pass a “sanctuary city” ordinance that would block local resources from assisting federal immigration authorities.
The city’s public school system is also set to declare itself a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants and LGBTQ students.
Trump’s administration, under his appointed “border czar” Tim Homan, has vowed to carry out mass deportations, despite opposition from sanctuary cities like Los Angeles, which aim to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, the BBC has reported.
The city’s school district will also vote on measures to protect immigrant and LGBTQ students, responding to what it views as an anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ agenda from the incoming administration.
