Susan Smith, who killed her two young sons in 1994 by rolling her car into a lake, is seeking parole after serving almost 30 years in prison.
Smith, now 53, will testify virtually to a parole board, arguing that she is ready to re-enter society.
Her crime, which involved a fabricated story about a carjacking, shocked the nation.
Smith was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, though she has faced multiple disciplinary actions behind bars, including drug use and inappropriate behavior with prison staff.
Despite continued arguments of mental instability at the time of the crime, the parole board has received mostly opposition to her release, NBC News has reported.
Smith’s ex-husband, prosecutors, and others, including the ex-prison guard involved with her, oppose her parole. If denied, Smith can reapply in two years.
