Romanian ultranationalist Călin Georgescu is leading in the presidential race, with 22% of the vote, according to provisional results. He is closely followed by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu at 21.4%.
Reformist Elena Lasconi has 16.3%, while hard-right candidate George Simion has 14.6%.
Georgescu, known for his nationalist and religious views, campaigned on reducing imports and supporting local farmers and production, Politico has reported.
Despite criticism for his past support of Romania’s fascist Legionary Movement, Georgescu’s strong surge has shaken up the race, with the final round scheduled for December 8.
