Judge grants Jack Smith request to dismiss Jan. 6 charges against Trump

A judge has dropped the charges against President-elect Donald Trump in the D.C. case related to the January 6 Capitol breach, following a request by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan granted the motion to dismiss the charges without prejudice, as Trump did not oppose it.

Additionally, Smith moved to drop his appeal in a separate case concerning classified records, which had been dismissed earlier this year.

These actions come after Smith signaled plans to wind down his cases against Trump following his 2024 election victory, Fox News has reported.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has called the cases politically motivated. Smith is expected to resign before Trump takes office.
