Man convicted in Laken Riley’s killing asks for a new trial

Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan man convicted of murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley and sentenced to life without parole, has requested a new trial.

Ibarra, 26, waived his right to a jury trial and was found guilty of all charges by Judge H. Patrick Haggard.

His attorneys argue the verdict was “contrary to law” and “evidence” and plan to supplement their motion after reviewing the case details.

Riley, 22, was killed during a struggle on the University of Georgia campus in February, the Associated Press has reported.

The case, linked to Ibarra’s illegal entry into the U.S. in 2022, fueled immigration debate during the presidential campaign.
