Traffic chaos caused by 30K pounds of melted chocolate on Bay Area highway

A big rig hauling 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of chocolate caught fire early Friday morning on westbound Interstate 580 near Grant Line Road in the East Bay, causing significant traffic disruptions during the morning commute.

The fire, which began around 6:18 a.m. due to a mechanical issue that ignited the truck’s brakes, quickly spread to the tires and the rest of the vehicle.

Most of the chocolate melted, with photos showing it oozing onto the road, the San Francisco Gate has reported.

Cleanup crews worked through the day, and as of 1:30 p.m., two lanes of the highway remained closed to clear the mess. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
