Mexico federal congressman shot dead in Veracruz state

Mexican congressman Benito Aguas, a member of the ruling coalition, was assassinated in Veracruz, alongside another victim.

Aguas was shot in Zongolica and later succumbed to his injuries.

The killing highlights ongoing political violence in Mexico, where over half a dozen elected officials have been murdered since last year’s election.

Attacks are more frequent at the municipal level, with 80% of political violence targeting local authorities, often linked to criminal groups seeking control, The Guardian has reported.

Despite efforts to improve security, violence has surged, making 2024 the most violent year since tracking began in 2018.
