Chen Jinping, 60, pleaded guilty to conspiring to act as an agent of the Chinese government by helping establish a secret police station in Manhattan’s Chinatown in early 2022.
The station, linked to China’s Ministry of Public Security, closed later that year.
Chen and co-defendant “Harry” Lu Jianwang allegedly destroyed evidence during an FBI investigation.
Chen faces up to five years in prison under a plea deal that drops obstruction charges.
The FBI condemned the incident as a violation of U.S. sovereignty, while China denied any involvement, claiming a policy of non-interference, the Express has reported.
Lu has pleaded not guilty and awaits trial.
