House conservatives raised concerns about Johnson to Trump before spending fiasco

Some conservative House Republicans raised concerns about Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to President-elect Trump ahead of the recent government funding crisis, criticizing his leadership and decision-making.

These complaints, which had been ongoing for weeks, included frustrations over Johnson’s handling of key issues and his management of the House GOP.

As the funding deadline approached, Johnson’s failure to secure Trump’s demands, such as including a debt limit increase, led to a growing GOP backlash.

Trump threatened primary challenges for Republicans who supported Johnson’s spending package, raising questions about Johnson’s future as Speaker, The Hill has reported.

Although Johnson has maintained communication with Trump and remains publicly confident, some Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), are now unsure about backing him in the upcoming January vote.

Trump’s continued support will be crucial for Johnson’s hold on the Speakership.
