Suspect who allegedly set woman on fire in the subway fanned the flames with a shirt, prosecutors say

Sebastian Zapeta, 33, faces murder and arson charges for allegedly setting an unidentified woman on fire while she slept on an NYC subway train in Brooklyn.

Authorities say Zapeta, who was previously deported after entering the U.S. illegally in 2018, set the woman’s clothes ablaze and fanned the flames, causing fatal burns and smoke inhalation.

The two were strangers with no prior interaction.

Zapeta was arrested Sunday, arraigned Tuesday, and is being held without bail.

Police have body camera footage, subway surveillance, and witness statements, CBS News has reported.

The victim remains unidentified, referred to as Jane Doe.
