President-elect Donald Trump mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, suggesting that Canada should become the “51st state” of the U.S. and promising a 60% tax cut for Canadians if they join.
Trump also jokingly proposed that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, whom he recently met, run for Prime Minister of Canada, joking that he would win easily without campaigning.
Despite Gretzky’s lack of interest in politics, Trump urged Canadians to start a “DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY” movement.
Trump also claimed that Canadian businesses would thrive and receive better military protection if Canada joined the U.S, the New York Post has reported.
The comments came amid mounting discontent with Trudeau’s leadership, as polls show Canada’s Conservative Party leading ahead of the next election.
