Janet Yellen says Treasury Department will need to take ‘extraordinary measures’ to avoid debt ceiling next month

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the U.S. will hit its debt limit between January 14 and 23 unless Congress acts or the Treasury Department takes “extraordinary measures” to avoid default.

This warning sets the stage for a potential debt ceiling battle early next year.

The debt ceiling, which limits how much the government can borrow, is suspended until January 1, 2024.

Yellen urged Congress to protect the country’s financial stability, NBC News has reported.

While Democrats support raising or eliminating the debt ceiling, Republicans, including President-elect Trump, have historically opposed it, with Trump recently advocating for its elimination.
