Ian Cramer, son of Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the death of Deputy Paul Martin during a police chase in 2023.

Cramer, 43, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer.

The crash occurred when Cramer’s vehicle struck an unoccupied patrol car, which then hit Martin.

The judge noted Cramer would likely serve only part of the sentence before parole, NBC News has reported.

Sen. Cramer previously stated his son struggles with severe mental health disorders.
