US releases one of longest-held Guantánamo Bay detainees to Tunisia

Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi, a Tunisian national and one of Guantánamo Bay’s longest-held detainees, has been released after over two decades without charge.

Captured in 2001 near the Afghanistan border, Yazidi was held amid unproven allegations of ties to al-Qaida.

Despite being cleared for transfer in 2007, diplomatic hurdles and his reluctance to resettle elsewhere delayed his release.

Yazidi’s departure is part of ongoing efforts under the Biden administration to reduce the prison’s population, now down to 26 detainees, The Guardian has reported.

Guantánamo remains a symbol of post-9/11 human rights abuses, with critics condemning indefinite detention and controversial interrogation practices.
