Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserted that Greenland is not for sale after President-elect Donald Trump suggested the U.S. might use military force to acquire it, along with the Panama Canal.
Trump also indicated interest in military action to secure both territories for economic and national security reasons, though he ruled out force against Canada.
Frederiksen emphasized respect for Greenland’s self-determination, and Greenland’s leaders rejected Trump’s proposals, stressing their right to decide their future, Axios has reported.
Trump additionally mentioned imposing tariffs on Denmark if they did not agree to his demands and suggested a vote on Greenland’s independence or potential U.S. integration.
