Man who randomly killed 3 on Detroit streets pleads guilty but mentally ill

Dontae Smith, 21, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder and other charges for randomly killing three people and wounding a fourth during a two-hour shooting spree in Detroit in August 2022.

The attacks, which left victims at a bus stop and a church doorway, occurred during a paranoid schizophrenic episode, according to his attorney.

Smith’s plea deal carries a minimum 30-year sentence, with parole eligibility afterward, the Associated Press has reported.

The shootings ended when an armed bystander intervened during the final attack.
