A man has been charged with the fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Caleb Rijos in the Bronx, described by police as a “random and unprovoked attack.”
Rijos, a high school student, was on his way to school when 29-year-old Waldo Mejia allegedly stabbed him in the heart and lungs.
He died at the hospital.
Mejia, with a history of criminal offenses and mental health issues, was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, and weapon possession.
Authorities believe he may have been involved in another stabbing earlier this year, ABC News has reported.
The incident has left the community in mourning, highlighting concerns over the handling of repeat offenders and mental health issues.
