NASA’s Goldstone Solar System Radar is tracking asteroid 2024 PT5 as it makes its closest approach to Earth in January 2025.
First discovered in August 2024, the 33-foot-wide asteroid orbits the Sun in a path similar to Earth’s, making it a temporary companion to our planet.
It remains at a safe distance, five times farther than the Moon, and poses no threat.
While its orbit suggests it could be a chunk of rock ejected from the Moon or a rocket body, scientists believe it is of natural origin, Sci-Tech Daily has reported.
The asteroid will continue its journey around the Sun after this close pass.
