Scientists have released an updated model tracking the magnetic north pole’s movement, revealing it is now closer to Siberia and continuing to drift toward Russia.
The magnetic north pole shifts due to Earth’s constantly changing magnetic field, and its movement has sped up and slowed unpredictably in recent years.
The update to the World Magnetic Model, which helps GPS systems track magnetic north, comes every five years to maintain accuracy.
While major systems like aviation and military navigation require the update, most everyday GPS users won’t notice a difference, CNN has reported.
The new model also confirmed the accuracy of previous predictions.
