AP says Trump blocking its reporter from Oval Office over not using Gulf of America “violates the First Amendment”

The Associated Press (AP) criticized the Trump administration after one of its reporters was blocked from attending an event over the organization’s stance on using “Gulf of Mexico” in its coverage, following a presidential executive order renaming it the “Gulf of America.”

AP executive editor Julie Pace called the move a violation of the First Amendment, stating it impedes access to independent journalism.

The AP’s style guide, which follows global naming conventions, refused to adopt the new terminology, asserting that the change applies only within the U.S. and does not affect other countries, CBS News has reported.

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression condemned the action, calling it unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.
