Officer killed after a gunman took hostages at a Pennsylvania hospital

A gunman, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the ICU at UPMC Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania, taking staff hostage before being killed in a shootout with police.

Officer Andrew Duarte was fatally shot, and three hospital workers, along with two other officers, were wounded.

Authorities believe Archangel-Ortiz targeted the ICU after a prior visit related to another patient.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro condemned the attack as “the act of a coward” and praised the officers’ bravery, the Associated Press has reported.

The incident is part of a rising trend of gun violence in U.S. hospitals.
