The IRS confirmed that former contractor Charles Littlejohn stole and leaked the tax files of at least 405,427 Americans, making it the largest data theft in IRS history.
Initially downplaying the breach, the IRS later admitted the scale after pressure from Rep. Jim Jordan.
Despite committing hundreds of thousands of felonies, Littlejohn received only a five-year prison sentence—amounting to less than seven minutes per crime.
Victims include everyday taxpayers and celebrities like LeBron James and Michael Jordan, Americans for Tax Reform has reported.
The IRS faced scrutiny for its delayed response and ongoing security failures, with watchdog reports exposing lax data protection.
