New York State Police are investigating the death of 22-year-old inmate Messiah Nantwi at Mid-State Correctional Facility, which Gov. Kathy Hochul called “deeply troubling.”
Reports suggest Nantwi was beaten by corrections officers, leading to 15 staff members being placed on leave.
His death follows the December beating death of another inmate, Robert Brooks, at a nearby prison.
Advocacy groups demand transparency, citing systemic violence in New York’s prisons.
Nantwi, serving a sentence for weapon possession, was also facing murder charges in Manhattan, CNN has reported.
Authorities, including the state attorney general, are conducting investigations.
