Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, taking over from Justin Trudeau in a race to lead the party into upcoming federal elections.
While Carney steps in immediately, Trudeau will remain prime minister during a transitional period.
Carney faces tough competition from the Conservative Party, currently leading in the polls.
One key challenge will be managing deteriorating relations with the US, particularly trade tensions with President Trump.
Carney has vowed to maintain tariffs on the US and seek new trading relationships.
He will face off against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who criticized Carney’s leadership, calling him ill-prepared to handle Trump, CNN has reported.
Carney responded by asserting that Poilievre’s plans would divide Canada.
