Greenland’s national election this week will determine 31 members of its parliament, with the possibility of a future referendum on the territory’s control looming.
While independence is not on the ballot, U.S. President Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland is influencing the vote.
Trump has emphasized the island’s strategic importance for national and international security, even suggesting the U.S. will acquire it “one way or another.”
Despite pushback, including from Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede, who supports independence, many Greenlanders oppose annexation, The Hill has reported.
A recent poll showed 85% do not want to become part of the U.S., though 56% support independence if it doesn’t harm their quality of life.
