A Texas midwife, Maria Margarita Rojas, has been arrested and charged with performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license.
Rojas allegedly operated three clinics in northwest Houston, where she performed abortions and employed unlicensed individuals.
This is the first criminal charge for abortion-related activities since Texas’s abortion ban took effect in 2022.
Rojas faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the abortion charge, and up to 10 years for the medical licensing violation

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton pledged to enforce the state’s pro-life laws.
