Michigan grandparents Christy and Paul Akeo were arrested in Cancun, Mexico, on March 4 over disputed fraud charges linked to a luxury resort membership.
The couple, who had challenged $117,000 in charges from The Palace Company, were detained upon arrival and remain in a maximum-security prison without bond.
Their lawyer claims they are being “held hostage” as retaliation, with the company demanding $250,000 and a public apology for their release.
Christy’s daughter alleges they are being denied medical care, with Christy losing 25 pounds due to food allergies, the Mirror has reported.
U.S. officials, including Rep. Tom Barrett, are working to resolve the case.
