Justice Sonia Sotomayor, speaking at Georgetown University, emphasized the importance of “fearlessly independent” judges and the need for citizens to hold public representatives accountable.
She criticized recent attacks on the judiciary, particularly from President Trump and his allies, who have called for impeaching judges and defying court orders.
Sotomayor stressed that judges must protect rights and ensure the state respects the Constitution.
Her comments came amid ongoing tensions over Trump’s efforts to reshape government policies, with the Supreme Court receiving multiple requests from his administration to intervene in legal rulings, the Washington Post has reported.
Chief Justice John Roberts also condemned calls for judicial impeachment, defending the independence of the courts.
