Four young girls, ages 8 to 16, were seriously injured in a meat cleaver attack by a relative in a Brooklyn home Sunday morning.
An 11-year-old girl locked herself in a room and called 911, prompting police to respond.
Officers shot the suspect, 49-year-old Lun Chang Chen, after he refused to drop the weapon and advanced toward them.
All four girls were hospitalized and are expected to survive.
A fifth child escaped to get help, the New York Post has reported.
The suspect is in critical condition, and the motive remains under investigation.
