Germany’s conservatives, led by Friedrich Merz, have reached a coalition deal with the Social Democrats to form a government, following the collapse of the previous administration five months ago.
Merz, set to become chancellor, promised to reform Germany with a focus on migration, the economy, and defense.
The new government plans to address economic challenges, increase defense spending, and reduce irregular migration.
Despite facing pressure from the far-right AfD, Merz vowed to strengthen Germany’s military and fulfill defense commitments.
The coalition will also provide “comprehensive support” to Ukraine.
However, critics argue the deal does not adequately address Germany’s economic crisis, with some fearing continued recession, the BBC has reported.
Merz’s government is expected to be approved in May.
