Vance breaks key tie after Senate fails to reject Trump’s national emergency on tariffs

The Senate failed to pass a resolution rejecting President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff agenda, with a 49-49 vote.

Three Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the tariffs, leading to a procedural deadlock.

Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, allowing the resolution to fail.

The resolution, introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden, sought to end Trump’s “national emergency” declaration supporting the tariffs.

Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul opposed the tariffs, while others, like Mitch McConnell, did not vote.

Critics, including Paul, argued that tariffs are a form of taxation that harms trade and economic freedom, Fox News has reported.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Republicans for supporting Trump’s tariff policy.
